The Right to Information (RTI) Act training session was held by the RTI team of the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) on July 5, 2024, in the SLPI Board Room. The session was led by Ms. Dineshika Jayasekara, the Project Coordinator at SLPI, and was specifically designed for interns from the Mawbima newspaper. Ms. Jayasekara provided an in-depth introduction to the RTI Act, including its origins and implementation.
During the training, Ms. Jayasekara covered various aspects of the RTI Act, such as the definition of ‘Right to Information’, the specifics of the Sri Lankan RTI law, and the role of the RTI Commission. She explained the structure of the information mechanism, the procedure for submitting an information application (RTI 01), and the appeal process. The session also addressed who can make an RTI request & how to submit a request under the Act.
The training underscored the significance of the RTI Act in empowering citizens by granting them the fundamental right to access information. Participants were guided on how to effectively use the RTI Act to promote transparency and accountability within public institutions.
