By In

An awareness training session on the Right to Information Act (RTI) organized by the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) was conducted on March 26th at Hotel Grand Silver Ray in Rathnapura, focusing on enhancing accountability and transparency within the RTI framework.

The event drew the participation of journalists and civil society organizations hailing from the Rathnapura district. The primary objective was to equip attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the RTI Act, including its fundamental principles and procedures for requesting information. Additionally, participants were trained on the practical aspects of submitting information requests and navigating the appeals process in instances of unavailability or dissatisfaction with the responses received.

The training incorporated interactive sessions where participants actively engaged in learning how to effectively utilize the acquired information in crafting news articles. It was noted that such training opportunities are infrequent for journalists in Rathnapura, making this session particularly valuable in empowering them with the necessary skills and knowledge to uphold transparency and accountability through their reporting.
