An RTI was filed requesting to know the following details about the student hostels in the University of Kelaniya.
Are third year Girls’ hostels adequate enough for the student population?
Is the security of the Girls’ hostels up to standards?
Are some of the hostels prone to subsidence?
On what basis have students have been arranged to accommodate the hostel for the next year as well?
What was the last year these hostels were renovated?
Are the students provided with satisfactory sanitary facilities?
Is there a risk involved in admitting additional students to the hostel buildings?
The RTI application was provided with a response by the University of Kelaniya saying that as the reason as to why these questions are raised is not mentioned in the application it is difficult for them to provide answers.
The University administration had requested the applicant to prove his identity by making an appointment with the university Registrar.
It should be mentioned that the practice of Right to Information law does not necessitate any such personal disclosure for an inquiry to be made and received with information.
