Dhanush* joined Badulla Saraswathi National School in the year 2015/2016 for his Advanced Level examination in the Technology stream. At the school, Dhanush was told that he can obtain the NVQ Level 4 certificate because the subjects he studied for the Advanced Level exam in the Technology stream are similar to the subjects that are taught for NVQ level 4 certificate.
However after students of Saraswathi National School including Dhanush sat the Advanced Level examination and received results there was no indication as to when they will receive the NVQ level 4 certificates.
After learning about the Right to Information Act at a workshop conducted by Sri Lanka Press Institute with the financial support from USAID-Strengthening Democracy Governance Accountability Project in October 2018, Dhanush applied an RTI application requesting to know about this issue. Accordingly, an RTI application was sent to the Deputy Principal of Badulla Saraswathi National College.
The Deputy Principal responded saying that the school management has received no such directive from the Ministry of Education on a NVQ level4 certification for students of the Technology stream.
The Deputy Principal stated that the school would take the appropriate steps once the ministry provides necessary information on this matter.
Dhanush was thankful for the Right to Information Act that clarified his doubts and in a way cleared his educational career.
