Provincial Department of Irrigation and Water resources management took steps to renovate sluice gates Galmetiyawa water tank in Trincomalee with the support of farmer’s association in the area.
From the commencement of the renovation, many eyebrows raised as the contractors’ behavior was questionable. The farmers faced difficulty as the contractor was approved by the officials of the farmer’s Association and the Department. When the officials were questioned they failed to answer.
The farmers took steps to inform media in the area about the process and further information with regard to renovation was requested through RTI application.
Earlier the contractor has informed that the pipeline has to be replaced as it was there for more than 50 years. After filing RTI it was advised to replace a pipe only up to 88ft of the old pipeline. According to for instructions the pipeline was duly renovated.
The farmers state that it was done well as a result of filing RTI.
