Residents of Madunagala, which is Suriyawewa managed to get street lights which were not functioning with the help of a right to information application.

Sri Lanka Press Institute’s initiative of educating the public in rural areas was a success. As a result on 20th July, the residents of Madunagala sent an RTI application to Suriyawewa Divisional Secretariat.

Madunagala is an area which encounters wild elephants. The villagers face many difficulties when the street lights do not function. After five days of the application, the lights were repaired.

“Madunagala junction is a place which many people gather for their day to day activities. Although we informed Suriyawewa Divisional Secretariat no action was taken to restore. Hence we sent a right to information application. Within a few days, streetlights were restored. We understand Right to Information act is definitely a strength to villages like ours. We request everyone to learn about the Act,” said Sumananada, a resident of Madunagala.

Residents of Madunagala have set an example to the whole country by receiving the fruits of Right to Information Act.
