Blood donated to  Jaffna Teaching Hospital is  given to private hospitals

A portion of blood donated to Jaffna Teaching Hospital is given to private hospitals, a response to an RTI application revealed.

There are 17 private hospitals functioning in Jaffna and 8 out of those have operating theaters. When surgeries are being carried out in these private hospitals the blood needed is supplied by the blood banks in government hospitals. 

It is revealed that  a portion of  blood donated to government hospitals is supplied to private hospitals with the approval of  the Health Ministry.

According to information provided by the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital R. Sathyamoorthi, the blood bank in the Jaffna Teaching Hospital has received 8596 pints of blood in the year 2022. Out of that, some 807 pints of blood had been given to private hospitals. Similarly, in the year 2023, the blood bank has received 9043 pints of blood. Out of that, 875 pints of blood had been given to private hospitals in Jaffna.

 In the first six months ended on 30 June 2024, the hospital received 4113 pints of blood and out of  which 441 pints were given to private hospitals.

It was revealed through the Right to Information Act that during the years 2022, 2023 and up to June 2024,  a total of 2023 pints of blood had been supplied to private hospitals. Out of that 1507 pints of blood had been supplied to a single hospital. Likewise, 209 pints of blood had been supplied to another private hospital in Jaffna.
