Is the contribution of the Battle for solar energy sufficient?

By In

Launched in 2015, the battle for solar energy is a project presented as a solution to the power shortage in the country. Hydro power plants, which generate the most electricity in the country, generate less power during periods of low rainfall, while thermal power plants and diesel power plants also suffer from frequent technical faults. Therefore, the focus is on solar power generation as a more sustainable method than these methods.

The objective was to increase power generation in Sri Lanka through the establishment of solar power generation units at the domestic level under the Battle for solar energy program and to find a significant solution to the core power shortage. There was a huge power shortage in the country in the first half of 2019 and there is a risk of such power cuts in the future as well. Battle for solar energy which was launched in 2015 did not appear to have contributed significantly to this power shortage. As this situation is likely to continue in the coming years, we made a request to the Ceylon Electricity Board under the Information Act on the extent to which solar energy will contribute to this in the future.

Our request for information is ought to determine the amount of electricity that is expected to be generated and added to the national grid in the coming years under the Battle for solar energy program. According to the information sent to us by the CEB, about M.W.200 can be added to the national grid. In the long run, by 2025, another M.W.800 are expected to be added to the national grid.

However, although solar energy can be used very successfully in Sri Lanka as an equatorial country, it appears that the contribution made by this project is low at the present and by working to maximize that contribution in the future, the power shortage will be minimized.
