Violence against 31,810 children, 45,404 women in last 5 years – Police bureau 7,758 children, 14,023 women sexually abused

There were 31,810 cases of violence against children and 45,404 cases of violence against women reported between 2016 and November last year, according to the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women (BPACW) of the Sri Lanka Police. These figures have been revealed through information obtained through the Right to Information Act from the Bureau which is located at the Sri Lanka Police Headquarters.

Out of the 31,840 reported crimes against children, 142 were murders, and 56 were attempted murders. In addition, 228 children were seriously injured, and 7,758 children were sexually abused. According to the bureau, 4,471 of them were abused by close relatives.

Out of the 45,404 reported crimes against women, 499 were murders, and 81 were attempted murders. In addition, 1,401 women were seriously injured, and 14,023 women were sexually abused.       

The BPACW currently has Divisional Bureaus in the 42 Police Territorial Divisions and, Children and Women (C&W) Units in 481 police stations in the country, according to a study by the Centre for Women’s Research (CENWOR) done for the National Police Commission (NPC).
